The members of the jury filed back into the courtroom and took their seats. Everyone in the audience was holding their breath as the judge turned to the jurors’ spokesperson. This was the moment Dee and Ryo had been waiting, with strained patience, for.
“Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, are you ready to give your verdict?”
“Yes, your honour.”
“Then you may do so.”
“We the jury find the defendant, Vincenzo Moretti, guilty on all charges, and recommend he be sentenced to no less than twenty-five years.”
“Yes!” Dee hissed under his breath. After all the delays the defence attorney had caused, and all his attempts at making his client appear innocent, Moretti was getting exactly what he deserved.
Ryo was wearing a satisfied smile too, although he kept quiet; now was not the time, he and Dee could celebrate later.
“Thank you.” The judge said. “I will take your recommendation into consideration when I pass sentence.”
The rest of the proceedings went smoothly, the judge deciding the jury had been too lenient considering the nature of Moretti’s crimes. He was sentenced to thirty-five years, although with good behaviour he might be eligible for parole after thirty.
For obvious reasons, Moretti himself was not a happy man. When she’d threatened to tell his wife about their affair, Moretti had murdered his mistress and her best friend. Now his wealthy wife was divorcing him.
“Thirty years minimum,” Dee gloated as they left the courtroom. “Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy.”
