Arresting suspects could be unpredictable; ask any cop. You never knew what you’d be faced with when you showed up on their doorstep, at their workplace, or at the bar where they hung out. Sometimes the suspect would resist arrest, pull a weapon, or try to run. Occasionally they might come quietly, but in Dee and Ryo’s experience that was rare. This time…

He sort of came quietly, if you didn’t count the giggling; didn’t really seem to mind being arrested at all, which was a refreshing change. Then again, it was by no means certain he understood he was being arrested. Dee and Ryo were a big foggy on that themselves, although they’d definitely read him his rights. Both of them had. Several times. Unless they were remembering that wrong.

It had all started when they’d arrived at the last known address of their suspect, Denny Morgan, believed to be behind a string of convenience store robberies which had resulted in three shopkeepers being hospitalised. They’d knocked, someone who definitely wasn’t Denny had opened the door, they’d identified themselves, and been invited inside. Of that much they were certain, but as they’d stepped into the main room and the door closed behind them, they’d been confronted by the sight of eight or nine people, sprawled on sofas, chairs, and the floor, barely visible through the thick haze of smoke hanging in the air.

They probably should have backed out quickly. Instead, they’d both reflexively breathed in, intending to hold their breath while they opened the windows to air the place out. That was almost certainly a mistake, although it was surprising how difficult it was to actually care at that point. Ryo had started coughing, breathing in more of the smoke. Dee, being a nicotine addict, didn’t cough; he was used to filling his lungs with smoke, and had smoked grass on a number of occasions when he was in his teens, but he still felt the effects. It was impossible not to.

Denny grinned up at them as they approached, and Dee, managing to keep his wits about him, identified himself.

“NYPD. Denny Morgan, we’re arrestin’ you on suspicion of armed robbery.”

“Okay.” Denny took another drag on his joint, passed it to the girl beside him, and held out his hands. It only took Dee three attempts to get the cuffs on.

Ryo started laughing. “All robbers have arms! Otherwise they’d be completely armless. Wouldn’t be armed robbery.”

Dee snickered. “Right!” He tugged Denny upright and the three of them staggered back to the door, out into the hallway.

The marginally fresher air cleared Dee’s head a bit. Ryo was still laughing at something.

“You’re high,” Dee accused, grinning.

“Am I? It’s nice, sorta floaty.” He looked at Dee. “You’re all wiggly.”

“I’m high too. We’re all high!” It was hilarious.

“Best party ever!” Denny agreed.

“Gonna catch hell when we get back to the precinct.”

Assuming either of them was in a fit state to drive…

The End
