“Man!” Dee groaned as he and Ryo clocked out at the precinct and grabbed their coats. “It’s been a day and a half! All I want is to go home and fall into bed.”

Ryo snorted. “A day and a half? More like two days.”

They’d had to work late unexpectedly, because of the six detectives supposed to be working the second shift, two had called in sick, and the wife of a third had gone into labour three weeks early. That had led to Ryo and his partner pulling a double shift. They’d be paid for it, maybe even get time and a half if they were lucky, and the Chief had juggled the work schedules so they’d get the following day off, but still, sixteen-hour workdays were way too long.

“Used to be, I could work a full shift, party half the night, snatch a couple hours’ sleep, and be back at work next day ready for anything.” Dee smiled ruefully. “Guess I’m not as young as I used to be.”

“Not sure I ever was,” Ryo joked. “Eight years as a single dad have taken their toll.”

“I’ll bet. Least we don’t haveta get up in the mornin’. We can sleep in as late as we want.”

“Good thing too. It’ll be getting on for one in the morning by the time we get home, and we’d have to get up again at six-thirty if we were working. That’s, what, five hours’ sleep at best, because I’m not going to bed without a shower and something to eat.”

“Yeah, me neither. It’s not so late that all the takeout places are gonna be closed though. We can pick somethin’ up on the way.”

“Suits me. Not pizza though. Last time I had pizza this late, it gave me nightmares.”

“Yeah? What about?”

“Being chased through a cheese swamp by a man-eating pepperoni,” Ryo deadpanned.

Dee stared at his lover. “Seriously?”

“No, you dope, I’m joking. I don’t remember what I dreamed about, just that it was scary, and I woke Bikky up screaming.”

“Okay, no pizza then. Chinese?”

“That’ll do.”

The cold night air woke them both up a bit as they stepped outside and made their way across the frosty parking lot to Dee’s car. Ryo paused, looking up at the moon, high overhead in a cloudless sky, and smiled.

“It’s a beautiful night.”

“Cold though.” Dee stamped his feet, breath steaming in the chill air.

Ryo shrugged. “It’s January; what d’you expect?”

“Let’s go get dinner and head home. Then if you still wanna admire the night sky, we can go up on the roof.”

“I thought you wanted to fall into bed?”

“Still do. Probably best not to right after eatin’ though, and like you said, it’s a beautiful night, perfect for stargazin’. Seems a shame to waste it sleepin’ when we don’t gotta work tomorrow. Just ‘cause we live together don’t mean we should stop doin’ the romantic stuff.”

“Can’t argue with that.”
