It was a gloriously sunny summer day, the perfect weather for being outside and not doing very much of anything other than relaxing and soaking up the warmth. A playful little breeze occasionally eddied around the converted warehouse’s high rooftop, rustling the leaves of the shrubs and fruit trees planted there, and not a single cloud marred the wide blue expanse of the sky.
Nosy the Fluff was mooching contentedly around Jack and Ianto’s roof garden, enjoying the sunshine and the fresh air, and admiring all the pretty flowers its human friends had planted in the raised beds, tubs, and troughs. They came in so many shapes, sizes, and colours, and most of them smelled as wonderful as they looked. Approaching a rose bed where the thorny bushes were adorned with large, fragrant, golden yellow blooms, it stuck its snout in amongst the silky petals and took a big, deep sniff, then sneezed as the pollen tickled its nose.
SNISH!
The force of its sneeze set the flowers to swaying, and something fluttered up from among them. For a moment, Nosy thought it must have sneezed so hard it had somehow blown the petals right off the flowers, but the fluttering thing was the wrong colour, and besides, it didn't drift down again, just kept fluttering about.
Growing curious, Nosy slithered a bit closer, its big green eyes goggling at the strange little fluttery thing, which came closer, and closer, and closer still, until it fluttered down to land right on the end of the Fluff’s fuzzy snout. Nosy's eyes crossed as it tried to focus on the small, winged creature.
"What've you got there, young Fluff?" Jack's cheerful voice rang out as he made his way across the artificial grass of the lawn to join the alien.
Nosy was trying its best to keep perfectly still, so as not to scare away the little thing perched on its nose. It really was very pretty, its velvety black wings with their deep red markings spread out as if were basking in the sunshine. Perhaps it was.
"Oooh, butterfly!" Jack exclaimed when he was close enough to see. "Ianto!” he called. “Come and look at this! Nosy’s found a butterfly, a Red Admiral no less! Hardly ever see those these days."
Ianto set aside the book he was reading and ambled over to join them. "Well, would you look at that! The wildlife is finding our garden already!” He smiled down at their fluffy friend. “First butterfly?"
"Hummm," Nosy agreed. Unfortunately, the vibrations its humming made disturbed the butterfly, and it took flight again, fluttering away among the flowers until it vanished from sight. The Fluff was disappointed; it had hoped the pretty thing would stay for a bit.
Crouching down, Ianto ruffled Nosy’s fur. "Don't be sad. With all the flowers we’ve planted up here, I'm sure we’ll soon have a lot more butterflies fluttering around up here for you to look at, and birds too. You're in for a very interesting summer."
“HUMMMMmmmm!” Nosy hummed enthusiastically. It was sure it was going to have a wonderful time!
