Martha gazed in wonder at the brightly coloured furry creatures gambolling about the meadow.
“They’re so beautiful! What are they?”
“The people here call them Bikra. They’re not indigenous to this world; centuries ago, several pairs were imported to deal with a vermin infestation, but they bred so fast they wiped out most of the native wildlife so now they’ve become the main source of income for the entire planet. Their fur is in demand for its bright colours, and they’re just about the only source or meat available. It’s a bad idea to introduce non-native species to existing ecosystems.”
