Drabble: Unnatural

Title: Unnatural

Author: badly_knitted

Characters: Roy, Jasmine

Rating: G

Written For: Challenge 313 – Open at tw100. Prompt used is Challenge 153: Creepy Child.

Spoilers: Small Worlds.

Summary: Jasmine’s stepfather finds her unnerving.

Disclaimer: I don’t own Torchwood, or the characters.

A/N: I probably won’t manage 12 drabbles for this challenge, but I already know I love it – all those wonderful old prompts to choose from. I’m almost spoiled for choice, I have a short list of 25 that I’m going to choose from, let’s see how many I manage to do.

There was something unnatural about Jasmine. Sometimes she’d look at you with a blank, emotionless expression on her face and it would make your blood run cold. For all that she was just a child, her eyes said otherwise. She gave Roy the creeps.

A little voice in his head whispered ‘changeling’, but that was just myth and superstition. Still, he didn’t like being alone with her these days. Deep down he was afraid of her, though he’d never admit it. What could an adult have to fear from a small girl?

He discovered too late, changelings aren’t a myth.

The End

wow what a nice approach to that topic! and she did look different indeed!
She never seemed quite human to me, as if she had already started changing before she went with the faeries.

Thank you!
Ah, that would explain why he was always so mean to her! He didn't just find her strange - he was afraid of her!

Great drabble! :)

That's the way it seemed to me anyway. She wasn't entirely human, I think deep down even her mother could feel that otherness about her but she tried to ignore it. Jasmine was already in transition, changing in small ways in preparation for joining the fae.

Thank you.
Oh Roy...you were a bastard but I'm not sure you deserved what happened to you....
He WAS a bastard, and a bully. Really not a nice person, I don't think he was a huge loss to society honestly, but it was intersting to look at Jasminer through his eyes.

Thank you!
It still doesn't excuse the way he treated her. I didn't like the way he always put her down and don't forget the slap - only a coward strikes a child like that. And her mother should have been more careful in her choice of boyfriend. Sorry about the rant...

I've read a few fics that suggested the Fae only took children who were abused and/or unwanted.
Oh, I agree, Roy was a poor excuse for a human being, but it was interesting trying to look at Jasmine through his eyes. He would excuse his behaviour by saying there was something seriously wrong with the girl, he was the sort of man to lay the blame for his abuse on the victim of it. I was glad the Fae killed him, he didn't deserve to live.

I like the idea that the Fae took the unwanted children, the ones who were suffering. But if that's so, why did they take so few? They must have had other criteria as well, otherwise more would be saved from their hellish lives.

Thank you.
That was one creepy episode and the little girl playing Jasmine played the part really well.

great story.
She was terrific, really convincing.

Thank you!
That episode always freaked me out a bit.
Me too! The Fae were creepy, but Jasmine, her stepfather and the paedo were just as bad!

Thank you!
Very original!
I've not seen a fic from Roy's POV before. Well done!
Thank you!

I don't think I have either, it really surprised me when I realised I was writing from his POV.
it's so true.
She was really creepy.

Thank you!
