Double Drabble: Crossed Wires

Title: Crossed Wires

Author: badly_knitted

Characters: Ianto, Jack

Rating: G

Written For: Challenge 313 – Open at tw100. Prompt used is Challenge 142: Leek/Leak.

Spoilers: Nada.

Summary: It’s amazing how much confusion one word can cause.

Disclaimer: I don’t own Torchwood, or the characters.

A/N: My twelfth drabble for this challenge. So, to celebrate reaching 12 again, I’ve written two linked drabbles.

A/N2: Because I have so many written, and because I have a doctor’s appointment first thing tomorrow, I’m posting another one now, otherwise I’ll never get them all posted before the end of the challenge.

Ianto, being a good Welshman, was very partial to leeks, so when he spotted some very nice ones in the local greengrocers, he bought one. It would be the perfect final ingredient in the casserole he planned to cook for dinner.

He was halfway through preparations when the phone in the lounge rang, so he abandoned his leek on the edge of the sink in order to answer it. He was still talking to his aunt when Jack arrived home, and interrupted his call briefly.

“Jack, if you go in the kitchen, watch out for the leek in the sink.”

OoOoOoOoO

Jack frowned as Ianto returned to his phone conversation. The sink was leaking? Ianto didn’t sound like he was talking to the plumber.

That was odd to start with; if there was any form of domestic disaster, Ianto could always be counted on to sort out the problem immediately, yet he seemed completely unconcerned.

Well, maybe he’d already dealt with it as best he could and was waiting for the plumber to arrive. Jack decided to see if he could do anything to help.

He entered the kitchen, approached the sink and burst out laughing.

Oh, leek.

That explained everything!

The End

Cute! Then again, leeks probably don't exist in 51st century, plus Jack is thinking of the other leak. Love these little domestic scenes :D
Yeah, that was the whole problem. Leek or Leak, both sound the same and when coupled with the sink, Jack's brain fills in the gap with the wrong leak, lol! It can happen to anyone.
LOL! Jack, you're in Wales--a LEEK should have been your first thought.

Perfectly understandable mistake, actually. I can see why Jack would be confused by Ianto's cavalier attitude towards a LEAK. That doesn't sound like Ianto at all. :-p
If Ianto had said "the leek on the counter" Jack wouldn't have been confused, but he mentioned the sink and Jack's brain jumped to the wrong conclusion. Mine would have too. There wasn't a leek in the house when Jack left this morning, lol!

Thank you!
Bless Jack because I know how he feels as I have family with some pretty strong accents and been in his position.
With this, accent doesn't even matter - both words are pronounced exactly the same, so confusion isn't surprising. It's the same with deer/dear. English is a weird language sometimes!

Thank you!
LOL! At least Jack didn't go looking for an actual leak before he noticed the leek. :)
Well, merry Mr Leek was in full view, it was kinda hard to miss, lol!

Thank you!
OMG!!! the weirdness of the English language!
Awesome!!!
We confuse ourselves and we grew up with the language! I honestly don't understand how anyone else manages to make sense of it. there are so many cases of two words being spelled differently but pronounced exactly the same and sometimes it's hard to tell which one someone means when they're spoken aloud. It's the same with deer/dear, dew/due and dye/die, never mind to/too/two. English doesn't make sense, which probably accounts for our weird sense of humour.

Thank you!
HAhaha oh good one.
*grins* Thank you And Ianto is completely oblivious to the confusion he's caused!

Well, doesn't that remind me of one particular April fool's joke? Lol, I didn't know there was even a prompt for the leek / leak problem!

Apparently, every gay couple has their problems with leaks and leeks, no matter if they live in Wales or New York! xD
*giggles* With this being an Open Challenge, all previous prompts are fair game and I just couldn't resist the leek one! I was thinking of your drabble when I wrote it, but wanted to do something a bit different - not that there was much I could do different. Poor Ianto has no idea Jack misunderstood him.

Thank you!
Hee, good thing Jack didn't try to actually fix the sink! That would've been awkward!
Well, he saw the leek and realised in time that it was the vegetable Ianto was talking about.

Thank you!
Ha ha
*grins* Thank you!

How long do you think this challenge will run? I have four more written, I don't know if I should carry on. Posting two a day, I'll finish Monday, new prompt usually arrives on Tuesday, but if it's late there might be time for a couple more. Then again, if it runs another week... Oh, decisions, decisions, lol! I'm having WAY too much fun with this one!
*grins* Thank you, glad you liked it!
Oh dear, wrong leek Jack.
*grins*
At least he gave himself a laugh!

Thank you!
lol
*grins* Thank you!
