Answer for question 4410.

What were your favorite books growing up? How did those influence your choice of a favorite genre when you got older?
I loved stories about horses when I was a kid, so I read all I could get my hands on, but my junior school teacher used to read to us at the end of the day and through him I discovered the Silver Brumby books by Elyne Mitchell, about wild horses in Australia, and The Weirdstone of Brisingamen by Alan Garner. I still have the books and still enjoy reading them more than 40 years later. But then my best friend at the time introduced me to Colin Kapp's Unorthodox Engineers short stories, and I've been hooked on SF ever since. I still like fantasy, and I still like stories about animals, especially true stories; I also enjoy the occasional detective novel, but I mostly tend to read SF these days. The only genre I really don't read is romance, because it bores me.
