Drabble: What Now?

Title: What Now?

Author: badly_knitted

Characters: Ianto, Jack

Rating: G

Written For: Challenge 267 – Starting Over at tw100

Spoilers: Cyberwoman.

Summary: His dreams are shattered, what happens now?

Disclaimer: I don’t own Torchwood, or the characters.

A/N: My first drabble of 2013! My resolution this year is to write at least one drabble a week, so wish me luck!

It was over. Lisa was gone.

He’d known for a long time, just couldn’t admit it, not even to himself. No choice now; his hopes and dreams were splintered beyond repair, his future unknown.

He looked at Jack.

“What do I do now?”

“That’s up to you. You have a month to think things over. After that, you’ll have a choice – retcon or Torchwood. A new life, or a fresh start with us.”

As Jack left the flat, Ianto sat on his couch and wondered if he had the courage to start over with people who no longer trusted him.

The End

Ianto's is the ultimate "starting over" story! You captured his p.o.v. so well I was sorry there were only 100 words.

Good luck with your resolution! One down, 51 to go. LOL. :-p
Possibly more than 52 altogether. I wonder if I could write 100 drabbles this year...

Thank you, it seemed the most obvious idea for the prompt and I knew immediately what I wanted to say, it was just a case of whittling it down to 100 words. I plan on writing at least one more, as again I know what I want to write, but there may be more as it's a very versatile prompt. My favourite kind =)
I bet you could write 100! That's a great goal to shoot for. Like you said, some prompts are very versatile. Just like Jack. :)

LOL! Yes he is!

The only problem with writing 100 drabbles will be that I want to write other fic too. We'll just have to see what happens this year!
Talk about starting over - that's a biggie!

LIke you, I'm trying to do the weekly drabbles but hope to do some other stuff too.
Thank you, t was the first scenario that came to mind when I read the prompt, though there are several other equally appropriate canon events that could be used. I've written another canon one and I'm considering a non-canon one... I like this prompt!

I have a lot of things to juggle at the moment and I really want to write something longer than a drabble, but at least the drabbles keep me writing when I haven't got much time for it.
Aww... Glad you thought to apply this challenge to this episode and this part of Ianto's story arc; good job!
Thank you, it was the first thing that came to mind - though there are several other points in canon which fit the prompt equally well. I'll probably write a couple more, it's a very versatile prompt.
This just made me wibble. Poor Ianto...he tried so hard and he never could have saved Lisa.

This was lovely, hon.
Thank you, and sorry for the wibblyness!

Losing Lisa broke him, but he found the courage to pick himself up and rebuild his life. I think the hardest part must have been accepting that he didn't fail to save her, she was already gone when he found her and nothing he did could have changed that.
the raw truth in 100 words! Bravo!!!!
Thank you. It's a pivotal moment for Ianto, he has a lot of thinking to do in order to make the right choice, but it's a choice only he can make.
That month would have been hell for Ianto. Utter hell.
Yes it would, but he needed time to sort out his life and decide what he wanted to do. I wanted it to be Ianto's choice, with Jack letting him decide instead of forcing a decision on him.

Thank you.
Poor Ianto, this was a really tough time for him.
It was, but I wanted Jack to leave the decision to Ianto and make the suspension more like compassionate leave rather than punishment. I really think Jack understood why Ianto had tried to save Lisa and was able to forgive him once his initial anger burned aawy.

Thank you.
Totally the biggest starting over for both of them - lovely.

Thank you! I found there are quite a few places places in canon where the Starting Over prompt was apt, but this was the first that came to mind. I wanted to show Jack giving Ianto the choice instead of making it for him. The suspension is more a kind of compassionate leave than a punishment, giving Ianto the time and space to decide his own future.
Wow I love this!
I was going to write Ianto and Jack post cyberwoman for this prompt but you have written it so much better than I would have done. I especially love the last line. It must have been so hard for Ianto to go back.
It must have been, but he found the courage from somewhere and got through those first awkward days. I liked giving Ianto the choice whether to take retcon or return to work, rather than him fearing that Jack would retcon or execute him. I thought once Jack's anger burnt itself out he would understand and even sympathise.

This is the first of 5 drabbles I ended up writing for the prompt - I feel like I'm hogging the community a bit =S
Five?!?
I haven't done one yet! I do have an idea for a Ianto Lisa one from cyberwoman though.
I need to read all the ones that have already been posted though - don't want to step on anyone's toes...
What can I say, the prompt liked me! I looked at it and all these ideas filled my head. The first four are canon-based, the last one is fluff. I was so glad to find I still had some fluff in my head, I was beginning to think I'd lost it o.O

Good luck with drabbling, most of the posted drabbles have nothing to do with Cyberwoman, I think it's just mine and a new one by tardisjournal that's just been posted and which I haven't read yet.
