Drabble: Use Your Loaf

Title: Use Your Loaf
Author: badly_knitted
Characters: Jack, Ianto.
Rating: G
Written For: Challenge 417: Slice at tw100.
Spoilers: Nada.
Summary: You’d think Jack had never seen bread before…
Disclaimer: I don’t own Torchwood, or the characters.

Drabble Version

Jack frowned at the loaf of bread. It was big, brown, crusty, and all in one piece.

“Haven’t you heard of sliced bread?” he asked. “It comes in a bag; you just take out what you need.”

Ianto looked pained. “Sliced bread might be convenient, but it’s stodgy and bland. Nothing beats fresh bread from the baker’s.” Getting out his bread knife, he carved a slice off the new loaf, buttered it, and handed it to Jack. “Try that.”

“Without any filling?” Jack sounded dubious, but took a bite anyway. Then he smiled. “You’re right; best thing since sliced bread!”

The End

Extended Version

Jack frowned at the loaf of bread sitting on the breadboard. It was big, brown, and crusty, not to mention all in one piece.

“Haven’t you ever heard of sliced bread?” he asked Ianto. “It comes in a handy bag and all you have to do it take out what you need.”

Ianto gave Jack a pained look. “Sliced bread might be convenient, but it’s also stodgy and bland, full of additives and preservatives. Nothing beats fresh bread from the baker’s.” Getting out his bread knife, he proceeded to carve neat slices off the new loaf, buttering one and handing it to Jack. “Try that.”

“Without any filling?”

“Bread should be more than just something to hold the contents of your sandwich together.”

Jack looked dubious, but took a bite anyway. After a moment, he broke into a smile. “You’re right, this is delicious! The best thing since sliced bread!”

The End

as always, Ianto is right, nothing beats fresh and warm bread!
I agree, I really hate sliced bread. So did mum. She only ever bought it if we ran out of the good stuff and had to get some from the corner shop, which only stocks sliced.

Thank you!
Thats true nothing beats fresh warm bread from the bakery.

great drabble.
Thank you.

Yes, fresh bread is just so great =)
Delicious, had to go and have some bread and butter. It's the smell, I think.Ianto can always teach Jack something - and how Jack enjoys it.
There's nothing like real bakery bread. I wish I could still eat bread =(

I liked toasting it over an open fire =D

Thank you!
Aww, so cute! Am hungry for fresh bread and melty butter now!
*grins* It is rather irresistible. I used to like cooking toast over the fire, I ate loads st a time. Sadly, I can't eat bread these days.

Thank you!

I have the same issue with cheese...
Cheese on toast, that's what I miss!

Thank you!
I miss grilled cheese on toast!. I hadn't done that in ages because my grill broke down. I just got a cafe grill though.:)

Oooh, lucky you!

Now I can't eat bread, I can't have cheese on toast =(

Its also nice with sliced tomatoes but I have to watch out that its not too hot.

Is it food allergies?
Yes, it means most of the things I used to enjoy I can't eat anymore =(

I get an upset stomach if I ignore my own.:(

I get an upset stomach all the time. Not fun =(

It can be a hassle to your health. I have good and bad days.

I dislike it if I'm at a social event and I have to explain why I can't eat particular foods. People assume because I'm slim that I don't like to eat, which is not the case.

Same here! Except I don't go to social events now, and if I have to go out, I can't eat anything beforehand.

I want to be able to eat and enjoy food, I don't want to be so seriously underweight, but the doctors have been less than helpful trying to find out what's causing my problems. =(

I forgot if you told me about seeing a nutritionist?
I had to go through a trial period of avoiding certain foods.

Avocado is good source of natural fat.

I was told to drink milkshakes/thick shakes but then sometimes I'm allergic to diary so its hard to find the right balance.

I wish I could be more helpful to you.:(
The hospital is supposed to be referring me to a dietician.

Milk gives me bad indigestion, plus it's a source of cholesterol and mine is too high.

Hopefully the dietician will be able to help.

That's okay, I don't expect you to solve my problems, but it's nice to know someone understands what it's like =)

Mine was both and nutritionist and a dietitian. It kind of goes hand in hand I suppose. She gave me information that's suppose to help with my symptoms.

But I have a high metabolism so it was more that I don't stress myself out if I wanted to put on a bit of weight.

I guess nothing really is a guarantee. Its more about trying to tolerate your condition.

I believe it helps to know that other people go through the same kind of things. I feel a sense of relief if I talk to someone and they understand.

It makes up for some of the things that don't seem to make sense in life.
It does really help =)

I'm hoping when I do eventually get an appointment that this dietician or whatever will be able to give me useful advice.
*facepalm* and to think that Jack was probably around at a time that didn't have sliced bread... Philistine.
He just got lazy over the years and forgot how good bread could actually be. He has a lot of life to remember, he's bound to forget a few things. Luckily Ianto is there to remind him.

Thank you!
