Drabble: Picking Up The Pieces

Title: Picking Up The Pieces

Author: badly_knitted

Characters: Jack, Owen

Rating: G

Written For: Challenge 288 – Reverse fandom – Last of the Summer Wine at tw100

Spoilers: Nada.

Summary: Owen is grumbling about the job. Again.

Disclaimer: I don’t own Torchwood, or the characters.

A/N: Title used is (obviously) Keeping Britain Tidy.

“Some days I feel like a litter collector,” Owen grumbled, picking up another fragment of something that had been ejected from the rift with so much force it had shattered. “Might as well be pushing one of those bins labelled ‘Keep Britain Tidy’. I didn’t join Torchwood to be a janitor.”

“Quit moaning, Owen.” Jack teased a fragment out of a nearby wall. “It doesn’t look like much now, but if one tiny bit is found by the wrong person it could advance science prematurely by centuries, completing wrecking timelines. We’re not just keeping Britain tidy, we’re preserving the future.”

The End

aha pearls of wisdom from the captain this time ...
He can be inspired sometimes, lol!

Jack knows the imporance of the fiddly little jobs - it's not all chasing aliens!

Thank you *hugs*
Nice perspective there, Jack! Even unglamorous jobs can be vitally important! :)
And Jack is far more aware of the dangers than the rest of the team are. He's not going to risk the timelines just because collecting all those little bits is boring and fiddly, he'll make sure the job is done properly.

Thank you!
Torchwood, More than just bin me. thats what their moto should be LOL.
LOL! Torchwood - Defenders of the Earth (and Bin Men).

Thank you!
Very nice.
I like when Jack is being all deep and insightful :-)
And he's right. Even the boring jobs are important.
In Torchwood, nothing alien can be dismissed as insignificant - even trash can be unexpectedly hazardous in a myriad ways.

Sometimes I get tired of Jack being shown as rather casual about the job, but he knows better than anyone how dangerous the smallest things can be. He almost ended the world with nanogenes after all.For all his flirtatiousness, when it comes to the job he's serious and focussed.

Thank you!
Nicely done
Thank you!

Owen just sometimes forgets that the little, inanimate things can be as damaging as the big monsters.
